While there are obvious differences, when it comes to a same sex relationship between two adults who are certain about their own sexuality it can be very successful and exactly the same as a traditional relationship.
I share the same experience as you with young and uncertain same sex couples. A friend of mine from Chicago and her girlfriend have recently moved to San Francisco. I know it seems cliche but really, gay people flock there. My friend was telling me wonderful stories of very successful adult women in monogamous long term relationships, this particular one being a softball coach and a college professor in her mid 30's.
In many ways when one of these situations turns out good, it is almost always more or a genuine relationship than what i experience with heterosexuals on a day to day basis. Many traditional couples don't understand each other or their partners physical needs the way same sex partners do, and they most likely never will. Its just easier to understand your own sex, why wouldn't their relationships be better?
Sometimes I wish I could be gay, i don't understand women at all but I'm just not attracted to men. To quote morrissey twice in one day on mahalo: "I always thought my genitals were a sick joke from god"
